This course will introduce you to digital photography and how to take control of your camera, to capture images looking how you want them to look.
A indoor based course with demonstrations and tutor guided practical exercises, introduce the key camera controls and principles, with terms explained in an easy to understand language. You will be encouraged to experiment.
The course has been designed with the complete beginner in mind and updated over the past 25+ years, using the constructive feedback from previous students and members.
There is an optional Practical Workshop where you will be guided through how to put into practise, what was covered during your course.
Let us help you begin your journey with photography.
If you are looking at this course as a gift for someone you know, we can offer you a Gift Voucher for all or part of this course.
This course has been designed for those new to digital photography and it is also useful to those who have been away from photography for a while and would like a refresher of the main principles.
These are the main subjects covered during your weekly sessions plus additional subjects will be introduced as they arise.
Don’t panic if you are not sure what some of the terms used below mean, as these will be explained in a non-technical manner.
Week 1
We look at the Exposure Triangle and the relationship between the three main camera controls of Aperture size, Shutter Speed and ISO sensitivity.
Getting the balance right gives you the control for a correctly exposed image which is neither, too dark or too light (under or over exposed).
The various Camera Modes let’s us choose how much control you have over the camera settings, from the:-
* Automatic mode, where the camera decides the best settings.
* Semi-automatic modes, you can choose and control one of the three main settings and the camera adjusts the balance with the others.
* Manual mode is where you have full control of the all of the camera settings.
We shall look at each of these Modes and when each may be the best one for you to use.
Week 2
The Aperture (A) also known as Aperture Value (Av), allows you to control how much light can enter your camera and also gives you creative control of the depth of field (DOF) - the area that appears in-focus in your image.
This gives you the choice of taking a photograph where the background is sharp as well as your subject, or the background is blurred and your subject is sharp.
Aperture/Aperture Value (A/Av) control, is your 1st key creative tool for your photography.
Week 3
Shutter Speed (S) also known as Time Interval (Tv), allows you to control how long light can enter your camera and is useful when shooting in low-light conditions.
Plus, it gives you creative control on how you capture motion. From freezing fast moving subjects so they appear sharp or giving a sense of movement to slow moving subjects by adding an element of blurring.
Shutter Speed/Time Interval (S/Tv) control, is your 2nd key creative tool for your photography.
Week 4
The camera ISO setting allows you to control how sensitive your camera is to light and is useful when there is either too much or not enough light for your shot.
ISO control lets you take your images in bright light and in much darker lighting conditions.
Camera sensitivity (ISO) control, is your 3rd key creative tool for your photography.
During Your Course
Other subjects are covered during the course and include:-
White Balance
This lets you compensate for the type of light you are shooting under so you can capture the true colours.
Focus
Correct focus ensures your subject is captured sharp, with options for stationary and moving subjects.
Metering
With this, you can control how your camera measures the light within the area you are shooting. Helpful for certain situations.
Composition & Framing
Having all the correct camera setting is half the story. You will also be introduced to some rules for composition & framing, to enhancing the look and feel of your image.
Bonus Workshop
During the optioinal practical outdoor workshop, you will be coached through how to put into practise, all the subjects covered during your course.
This will be through a number of guided exercises as we take a gentle walk to view a range of subjects, in the local area.
This includes time afterwards for a Q&A session …. and perhaps even a cup of tea!
All you need is your camera with the battery fully charged and the memory card emptied of any previous images taken. You might wish to bring a note pad and pen.
Camera Type
This course is for Digital-SLR (D-SLR) cameras that allow you to change the three main settings of:-
Aperture / Aperture Value* (A/Av)
Shutter Speed / Time Interval* (S/Tv)
Camera Sensitivity (ISO)
(*) Some camera manufacturers use slightly different terms for the same setting.
Is My Camera Suitable?
If you are not sure if your camera lets you adjust the settings as given above, let us check for you. Just email us the make and model of your camera.
